Our DogsThe dogs are our partners. They are an integral part of our operation.
During lambing season the dogs are out there in the flock, guarding the ewes from possible predators, cleaning the babies and lamb sitting if first time mothers panic and abandon new lambs. Our dogs are all very friendly to our family, and they protect us and our livestock 100%. They are wary of outsiders, but have very stable temperaments and are trustworthy with children. |
Great Pyrenees History |
Great Pyrenees have been selectively bred to be sheep guardians for at least 5000 years.
They are very intelligent dogs, who think on their own and work independently, so for people used to obedience type dogs it can be quite an adjustment initially. They have strong instincts and I have selected only superior guardians to be used in our breeding program. A dog has to prove its worth before it is bred. |
Our Training
|
The pups are whelped in the barn and raised in the field. They are handled at birth, but are not overly socialized. They all know basic commands, but are raised primarily by the pack. It is my experience that the best training for these dogs is from immersion with the stock they will be guarding, and through a mature guardian as a guide.
